MATR Counseling offers a structured clinical internship and training program designed to prepare emerging clinicians for licensure and meaningful, sustainable careers in the mental health field. Our internship experience combines rigorous clinical training with compassionate mentorship, allowing interns to develop the confidence, competence, and professional identity required for effective clinical practice.
At MATR Counseling, interns are not simply observers. They are active participants in the therapeutic process, working with real clients while receiving consistent supervision, education, and support.
Our program is designed for graduate-level counseling students who are completing practicum or internship requirements as part of their CACREP or equivalent counseling programs.
The MATR internship program provides a comprehensive educational experience that integrates clinical practice with ongoing professional development. Interns receive hands-on training in trauma-informed therapy while developing foundational skills in ethical decision-making, clinical documentation, and treatment planning.
Throughout the internship experience, students learn how to conduct clinical assessments, develop treatment plans, document psychotherapy sessions, and implement evidence-based therapeutic interventions. Interns are gradually introduced to increasing levels of clinical responsibility while receiving ongoing supervision and guidance.
Our clinical model emphasizes trauma-informed care, safety, emotional attunement, and ethical clinical practice. Many of the individuals served at MATR are navigating the effects of trauma, abuse, anxiety, relationship challenges, and major life transitions. Interns gain experience working with complex clinical presentations while developing skills that support long-term client healing and recovery.
A defining feature of the MATR internship program is our commitment to intentional mentorship and high-quality supervision. Interns receive individualized supervision designed to support both clinical skill development and professional identity formation.
Supervision includes regular one-on-one meetings with a licensed clinical supervisor as well as opportunities for group consultation and collaborative learning. Supervision focuses on clinical conceptualization, ethical decision-making, trauma-informed interventions, and therapist self-awareness.
Interns are encouraged to engage in reflective practice, deepen their understanding of therapeutic relationships, and develop their own clinical voice while maintaining fidelity to evidence-based standards of care.
MATR Counseling specializes in trauma recovery and abuse recovery, and interns receive exposure to trauma-informed therapeutic frameworks throughout their training. Interns develop foundational understanding of how trauma impacts the nervous system, emotional regulation, relationships, and identity.
Clinical training may include exposure to evidence-based and trauma-informed approaches such as:
EMDR-informed trauma treatment
Attachment-based and relational therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
Internal parts work and relational trauma frameworks
Nervous system regulation and grounding interventions
Interns learn how to safely support clients as they process painful experiences while maintaining emotional stability and therapeutic boundaries.
In addition to clinical training, the MATR internship program emphasizes professional development and preparation for long-term careers in mental health.
Interns gain experience in:
Clinical documentation and insurance-compliant records
Ethical and legal standards of mental health practice
Treatment planning and measurable goal development
Professional communication and interdisciplinary collaboration
Building a sustainable clinical career in private practice or community settings
Our goal is to ensure interns leave MATR Counseling not only with required clinical hours but also with the confidence and competence needed to thrive as mental health professionals.
MATR Counseling operates as a collaborative group practice where clinicians regularly consult with one another to support client care. Interns become part of this professional environment and are encouraged to engage in case consultation, collaborative discussion, and shared learning.
This model allows interns to see how experienced clinicians approach complex cases and develop thoughtful clinical judgment within a supportive professional community.
Interns at MATR Counseling play an important role in the healing journeys of the individuals we serve. Through their work, interns provide compassionate care to clients while developing the skills required for ethical and effective clinical practice.
Our hope is that each intern leaves MATR Counseling not only better prepared for licensure, but also deeply grounded in the values of empathy, integrity, and trauma-informed care.
